What: The benefits and negatives of giving homework to do in class.
So What: I am obviously in college now and I find it weird that some of my teachers still give homework to be completed in class. It comes across to me as the teacher being lazy. I feel like why am I required to come to class to work on some homework that I could just do at home. Obviously in class homework is essential for elementary kids, since they are going to need more help getting started with their work, but when does it become pointless.
Now What: I think we as future teachers need to make sure that we are using our class time wisely. We shouldn't be trading away valuable teaching and interaction time, for individual work.

Matt,
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you're talking about. Particularly at Northwest University where I am paying $20,000 a year tuition - I feel like our class sessions ought to be used as resourcefully as possible. It also frustrates me when we are given busy work at a private University while the teacher just slips away to do his/her other work. I want to get as much as I can out of this experience and be taught everything an experienced professor can teach me. Indeed, extra class time is essential for elementary and even middle school kids, but in college? Thank you for confirming this common reflection that has boggled my own mind!
